As you know by now, I don't update this site on a regular basis. Once a year or so -- just to make sure that this page remains "alive" so that we can preserve all the old stlfilmwire.com history.

So what have I been up to? I've contributed to a couple of children's programs, produced all sorts of product for a local association, and have remained quite busy. My co-writer and I are forever working on different projects -- whenever we can schedule the time to do so.

I am once again open to working as a writer-for-hire. Have a film or video project that you need creative assistance with? Need to hire a writer? I'm your guy.

CASTING CALL FOR FEATURE FILM, “ VENGANZA AZTECA”
Columbia, MO – Feb.12, 2009

On Feb. 21st, 2009, a casting call will be held for a new feature film,
directed by Aaron Crozier and starring Mil Mascaras, the famed Luchadore
wrestler, entitled, “Venganza Azteca.” A sequel to the hugely popular film,
“Mil Mascaras Vs. The Aztec Mummy,” Venganza Azteca follows the
continuing adventures of Mil Mascaras as he faces his biggest threat yet.
After a break-in at his campus storage facility, a college professor
calls upon his old friend and world hero, Mil Mascaras, to come investigate.
Meanwhile, a group of visiting luchadore wrestlers begins to disappear,
one luchadore at a time. After several encounters with police, ninjas, Aztec
warriors, and possessed sorority girls, Mil starts to realize these crimes are
interwoven and that he faces an ancient evil more dangerous than anything
he's faced before!

Casting call will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21st, 2009 from 9:00 a.m -
3:00 p.m at the Corner Playhouse located at the northeast corner of Hitt &
University in Columbia, MO. All actors must bring a current headshot and
acting resume for the auditions. All talent auditioning will perform a cold
reading of selected sides from the script against other talent. All
auditioners must be 18 years or older to be considered.
No appointment necessary; First come, first served basis. We will be

Upper 30's to mid 50's
Female, any ethnicity, long hair that looks good worn up, slender build, average

A sexy, smart, monocle-wearing, scientist who has eyes for Mil Mascaras. As
the investigation continues, the Professor becomes more and more caught up
with his own self-doubts and Dr. Stennis steps in to provide assistance in
catching the perpetrators. She is confident, focused, and independent.

cooperate with campus police. Mil Mascaras is a personal hero of his but that
won't stop Chief Sanders from performing his duties.

Mid 30's to mid 40's

The campus counterpart to Chief Sanders - very dutiful, very respectful of Mil
Mascaras. Less seasoned, but also does not appreciate the city police butting in
on his jurisdiction.

Skyler

in seeming cool to his peers - also a bit of a "mama's boy" and this has made him
a bit reluctant to break rules that his peers think less of breaking - but Skyler is
really seeking acceptance.

towards the Aztec Chief and frat boys.

Liquor Store Dude: a store clerk who likes that there isn’t any crime and is annoyed by Cobalt’s angst.

Nerd 1 & Nerd 2: Two Emo kids that Cobalt mistakes as drug dealing criminals

Show 2- “Day One”: Challenged to choose between alcohol and his girlfriend, Charlie is forced to battle his demons and search for the meaning in life.

Charlie: is a twenty-five year old alcoholic. He works for an ad agency, making a good living for a guy his age. He’s fairly introverted, enjoying the company of his girlfriend, but perfectly content being by himself.

Veronika: is Charlie’s twenty-three year old girlfriend. She’s the opposite of Charlie – she goes to college, has many friends, is very outgoing and assertive. She has an insatiable lust for life and strives to experience everything it has to offer. Veronika loves Charlie, but tells him she’s leaving him if he doesn’t ease up with the alcohol.

Jack: is Charlie’s best friend. They’ve known each other practically their entire lives. Jack supports Charlie but is a little annoyed with his relationship with Veronika – he feels like a third wheel. Like Veronika, Jack is a student at college.

Charlie’s Dad: is a recovering alcoholic. As Charlie puts it, though, he was always a “fun drunk.” The dad is a character of knowledge and wisdom. He speaks from experience.

Charlie’s Mom: is passionate. She’s been through a lot with this family. Along with Dad, she’s very supportive.

Joni Tackette is the St. Louis Casting Director for the feature film, "Up In The Air." Production begins in St. Louis in early March and will finish at the end of April.

Registration for people interested in working as paid extras while the movie films in St. Louis will begin around mid-January 2009.

Approximately 2,100 extras will be needed during the eight weeks of St. Louis filming. All types of men and women will be needed.

The result of this two-year civic project will be a St. Louis region that competes head-on for jobs in the digital content market and offers more related jobs in the arts than ever before.

With the Regional Arts Commission as its Fiscal Sponsor, St. Louis Cinematheque has an ambitious yet conservative mission based on a fundamental premise: film (the only lasting medium able to contain all art forms), in the right context is a viable financial enterprise capable of delivering a sustainable economic surge.
The mission of St. Louis Cinematheque is to make St. Louis a go-to city for digital media production and related creative arts by employing the high calibre of creative professionals from here or currently practicing their craft here as visual, musical, digital, literary and performing artists. These creators along with our world class cultural institutions and host of businesses that support both non-profit and commercial creative services will, for the first time as a whole,
collaborate on a single project.

According to a World Association of Newspapers report, 50 percent of media consumption was digital in 2007. By 2010, that number will rise to 66 percent and to 80 percent by 2020. That 60 percent increase in digital-based media over a 10- year period along with the demand for original programming and the depth of St. Louis talent is a sound reason for St. Louis to invest time, talent and money in this growth-industry.

Made up of short films ranging from 15 seconds to three minutes long (156 minutes in total), St. Louis Cinematheque will result in an attention-getting digital film collection. WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
We start of in the 1980's, where Robert 'Fish' Fishman (Wilson) is a rock drummer in an up-and-coming glam metal band. Well, one day a record company comes knocking and dangles a recording contract in the band's face -- with one stipulation: they gotta gut the Fish. Flash to present time as Fish has turned his back on metal music, and has been living a very unfulfilling life, all while his former bandmates have gone on to multi-platinum album success.

Things begin to roll forward when Fish's nephew's rock band needs a drummer for a special prom gig. As anticipated, they ask Uncle Fish. Well then (of course) the journey begins. That gig leads to other gigs, those gigs lead to touring... and so the story goes.

WHAT WILL AN AVERAGE AUDIENCE THINK?
They'll enjoy themselves, but by December they'll probably forget they saw it.

WHAT DID I THINK?
I'm still not certain if Rainn Wilson is leading man material. He's certainly a terrific supporting actor. But as of today he hasn't really shown us anything more than subtle variations of his "Dwight Schrute" character.

DID I LAUGH?
Yes. Actually there was one memorable scene involving an attic.

GEMS TO NOTE:
Josh Gad as Fish's nephew Matt. This kid had some terrific moments... especially the scene where Matt is sleeping. Another gem is Jason Sudeikis as the slimy David Marshall.

MISUSED GEMS:
Fred Armisen was there on the screen and ready to kick ass. However his character was given absolutely nothing to do. Will Arnett as Lex could have also been so much more than it was. Another wasted talent.

Rent it, but only if you can check it out at the library or get it on discount.

Calling All St. Louis Filmmakers!

Cinema St. Louis and the Animal Protective Association of Missouri
invite St. Louis-area filmmakers to create a short film that celebrates
the bond between people and their pets.

Finalists will be showcased on the APA website, the APA MySpace
page, YouTube and at the APA's Grand
Reopening Party.

Cinema St. Louis will then choose one of the films to screen as part of
its St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase in July.

Contest Details
St. Louis-area filmmakers interested in participating must choose a
theme from the APA website and create a short that runs a maximum of 5
minutes based on their chosen theme. Some examples of possible themes:
the APA as a St. Louis landmark, adopt a pet instead of buying from a
pet store, pets can add seven years to your life, etc.

Experimental, narrative, animated and documentary approaches are all
acceptable. The shorts can be shot in any film or video format, in
either color or black-and-white.

Filmmakers must live within a 120-mile radius of St. Louis

All films must be submitted on DVD.
There is no entry fee.
Deadline is April 1st, 2008 .
Submission of short does not guarantee its use at the APA.

Cinema St. Louis, the presenters of the St. Louis International Film Festival, has announced the five finalists in its annual CinemaSpoke screenplay competition and workshop. The five screenplays will receive partial readings, one a month from April through August, with the winning script receiving a full reading on Monday, Sept. 15.

The finalists and the titles of their scripts, with the reading date:

April 7: Aaron Coffman's "The Drowning"
May 5: Vanessa Revard Roman's "The Importance of Doubting Tom"
June 2: Blair Dalton's "The Alien Dude"
July 7: Jean Whatley's "The Love You Need"

All readings will be held on a Monday at 7 p.m. in the Rialto Room on the fourth floor of the Centene Center for Arts & Education, 3547 Olive St. in Grand Center. The readings are free and open to the public.

On each evening, the first 30 pages of a script will be read by actors, with judges offering critiques and the author responding to questions from both the judges and audience members.

CinemaSpoke screenplay competition now accepting submissions

Cinema St. Louis is now accepting submissions for the 2008 CinemaSpoke Screenwriting Competition and Workshop. CinemaSpoke is an opportunity for St. Louis-area screenwriters to have their work read aloud in a public forum by professional and amateur actors and to receive feedback from a panel of film-industry experts experienced in producing, screenwriting, filmmaking, development, and criticism. Deadline for submissions is Feb. 29, 2008.

A committee of three selection judges read the first 30 pages of each submitted screenplay. Based on these 30 pages, the judges will then select five scripts for the competition. The five 2008 CinemaSpoke finalists will be announced on Monday, April 3.

The first 30 pages of each selected script will be given a public reading. Readings will be held at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of every month - April 7, May 5, June 2, July 7, and Aug. 4 - at the Pulaski Performing Arts Atrium on the fourth floor of the Centene Center for Arts & Education, 3547 Olive St. in Grand Center. The winning screenplay will then receive a full reading on Sept. 15. All readings are free and open to the public.

Writers will be allowed to play a role in casting the actors who will do the live readings of the competition scripts. A panel of five film professionals will offer criticism and feedback based on these readings. The author will also respond to questions from both panelists and audience members and has the option to rewrite the script based on feedback from the panel. Once the panel has read the final versions of all five scripts in their entirety, a winning script will be selected from the five.

CinemaSpoke selection judges are St. Louis Post-Dispatch film critics Harper Barnes and Calvin Wilson, Professor Emeritus of Film at St. Louis Community College at Meramec Diane Carson, and Missouri Film Commission assistant director Andrea Sporcic. VLAA TO OFFER FAIR USE SEMINAR

Today, anyone with a video camera and movie-editing software can make a documentary. But can the aspiring filmmaker afford to make it legally? Just a few years ago the answer often was “no.” Now, thanks to a best practices fair use statement developed and disseminated by their peers, documentary filmmakers are dramatically lowering clearance costs -- the licensing fees paid to copyright holders for permission to use music, text, archival photos and film and news clips -- while also respecting copyright ownership.

These new developments will be explained during a seminar for filmmakers that will be offered by St. Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA) on December 3. The program, which is entitled Best Practices in Fair Use, begins at 7:00 p.m. and will conclude at 9:30 p.m.

Award-winning filmmaker J.J. Hanley of in Kartemquin Films in Chicago (Hoop Dreams, Refrigerator Mothers, Vietnam Long Time Coming, 5 Girls) will show clips to present her “in the trenches” perspective on fair use. Mark P. McKenna, assistant professor at St. Louis University of Law, will address the legal issues.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Directorial Case Study. Jay Kelley conducts a workshop that examines the director’s role by showing several directors’ takes on the same scene and exploring the differences in their approaches to acting, staging and shooting. Participating directors and actors include Kenny Kinds, Tom Robinson and Travis Hill.

12:45-2:15 p.m.: Shooting in St. Louis: "Ghost Image." Producer Srikant Chellappa and director Jack Snyder explore the ins and outs of making independent features in St. Louis.

2:30-3:30 p.m. Q&A: Screenwriter/novelist Scott Phillips. The author of "The Ice Harvest" discusses his work as both a screenwriter and novelist.

3:45-4:45 p.m.: Q&A: Documentarian AJ Schnack. The director of "Kurt Cobain About a Son" and "Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns)" talks about his career in documentaries and music videos.

5-6 p.m.: Q&A: Director George Hickenlooper. The director of "Factory Girl," "The Man From Elysian Fields," "Mayor of Sunset Strip" and "Hearts of Darkness" chats about his work.

Film Synopsis:
"Death can be dreadful and worthwhile, depending on where you
stand. In the Dead and the Dreaming, eight tales unravel deaths
secrets, as the characters unravel theirs. On a dark country road, a
hit man finds a reason. On the rivers edge, two white trash thugs
find the rhyme. While two men debate bullets over cancer, four
gunrunners debate death over prison. As one madman plays a lethal
game of chess, another falls for the photographer who stalks him.
Ranging from foreign language to silent film, The Dead and the
Dreaming throws different flowers at the coffin. Eight short films
tell a story with one message: Death is a mysterious creature;
teaching while it takes away."

We are in need for the following characters (Please read the
character descriptions to see if you fit:

Roberta – An outspoken portly Jewish or Italian American woman
between the age of 55-60

Harold – A courteous former athlete of Jewish or Italian descent,
between the ages of 55-60. Roberta’s Husband of 30 years.

Max – A tall, lean, dangerous individual with a very intimidating
presence. He’s between the ages of 30-50, possibly retired Special
Forces.

Burle – A faded former pilot in his early 60’s. Caucasian male.

Chucky – A youthful man of Latino or African American descent
between the ages of 25-30, with a quiet, and playful menacing presence.

The Photographer -A slinky, darkly seductive and eccentric
Caucasian female between the ages of 21 and 35. She has a tantalizing
presence and a sick obsession for the macabre.

Gavin – A muscular, overly sensitive, bald Caucasian male between
the ages of 25-35.

Shawn – A tall, loudmouthed, menacing Caucasian male with a severe
face, between the ages of 25-35.

Chris – A serious-minded, friendly, suburban Caucasian male in way
over his head, between the ages of 25-35.

Sid – A straight up South City Hoosier, between the ages of 30-35
who clerks at a 7-11.

Jake – Former Marine, working class, Caucasian male between the
ages of 60-70.

Carl – Passive, working class Caucasian Male between the ages of
60-70.

The Corpse- A Caucasian, attractive, physically fit female (curvy
or athletic), who has been brutally slain. 18 or over. Disclaimer:
Must be comfortable with being fully nude.

St. Charles, MO—The St. Louis area’s go-to photography studio for professional talent, actors and models has announced its workshop schedule for July and August. On the schedule are a commercial acting workshop from one of the St. Louis area’s top acting coaches, Kate Frisina; ACTING UP, a creative approach to acting for kids ages 8-13; MODEL GIRLZ, for preteen girls who want to have a fun modeling experience that emphasizes self-esteem and confidence-building, given by former America’s Next Top Model contestant Kristi Grommet; and ON CUE, a primer for anyone who wants to be an on-camera talent.

St. Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA) is pleased to announce its 25th Anniversary Short Film Contest. Filmmakers who live in Missouri and Southwestern Illinois are invited to submit short films centered on the theme “Left Brain/Right Brain.” Winners will receive cash prizes and have their films screened during VLAA’s Anniversary celebration event, which will be held on Saturday, September 15, in Steinberg Auditorium on the Washington University campus.

Submissions should be 3 minutes or less, including credits. All genres are eligible: documentary, narrative, experimental, comedy, animation or music video. There is no submission fee. Filmmakers will retain the rights to their films but must authorize VLAA to post their films on its Web site.

Deadline for entries: August 15, 2007, 5:00 p.m.

Saturday Night Live's Bill Chott to emcee the event at The Pageant

Critically acclaimed local musicians The Trip Daddys, Finn's Motel,
and Jesse Irwin will perform at the Pageant on Saturday, June 2nd for
the Crunchy Cool SummerJam. The show will be hosted by Actor/Comedian
Bill Chott of the Farrelly Brothers' film "The Ringer" and Saturday

The event will benefit "The Bloodfest Club", the upcoming

Download the entry form and send your film to Cinema St. Louis! This is probably my favorite local event and I encourage you to attend -- even if you aren't a filmmaker. It is an excellent place to network, and best of all, you'll have plenty of great films to enjoy!

Here is the info:

The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase (SLFS), an annual presentation of the nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, serves as one of the St. Louis area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. SLFS screens works that were written, directed, edited or produced by St. Louis natives, and/or those with strong local ties. Films will be accepted from an 120-mile radius of the metro St. Louis area.

Diverse in every respect, the films range across all genres and styles including comedies, dramas, narratives, documentaries and experimental works. The filmmakers themselves are all as unique as their cinematic visions, ranging in age from grade schoolers to adult professionals working in the film industry.

This 2007 edition of the SLFS will take place July 21-26, 2007. The event will begin with a day-long series of seminars related to the filmmaking process at the Centene Center for Arts and Education on Saturday, July 21st. Screenings will take place at the Tivoli Theatre from Sunday, July 22nd through Wednesday, July 25th. Cinema St. Louis will host a filmmakers reception and awards party on Thursday, July 26th at Blueberry Hill.

I just learned from Jerry Jones, Director of the Missouri Film Office, that the jobs creation bill, House Bill 327, has passed the legislature and is headed to Governor Blunt with the full $10.5 dollars intact for the Film Production Tax Credit program.

Jerry is urging anyone who is interested and passionate about enhancing film production in the state through the Missouri Film Production Tax Credit program to contact the Governor in the coming week to let him know that you support HB 327.

This will be a terrific opportunity to enhance the business of filmmaking in Missouri. So, anything constructive that you, your colleagues and / or your film organization members can do to urge Governor Blunt to sign this bill would be useful and productive. We are very close to creating a whole new positive climate for film production in the state of Missouri and the resulting jobs creation and economic impact this will have on the state.

A special word of thanks to the Commission’s legislative members, Senators Norma Champion and Maida Coleman, and Representative Mike Sutherland is also in order. Be sure to thank them for their tireless support of this program and film production in Missouri. Your thanks should also be extended to Representative Ed Robb and Senator Jason Crowell – the sponsors of the original film production tax credit bills in the House and Senate. They have gone the extra mile to see to it that the film production tax credit recommendation have made it this far in the legislative process.

Cinema St. Louis, the presenters of the St. Louis International Film Festival, has announced the five finalists in its annual CinemaSpoke screenplay competition and workshop. The five screenplays will receive partial readings, one a month from April through August, with the winning script receiving a full reading on Monday, Sept. 10.

We are proud to announce that we have now opened up our call for entires for the third SHOW ME DIGITAL FILM FESTIVAL to be held in Cape Girardeau, Missouri tentatively for late February 2007 (exact date and venue to be announced soon)!

We are now accepting submissions for short film and video works. Films must be submitted to us in viewable/screenable DV, VHS, or DVD format. All entires must be accompanied by production and contact info, and the nominal entry fee (currently the early-bird fee of $5 to cover costs). The deadline for entries is currently January 31st, 2007 (this may be extended dependent uopn submission).

This is a competitive film festival, with awards being given by a panel of independent judges and the festival audience. OK, Tony La Russa is now an executive producer; 3 Nights in August will soon become a motion picture. My question? Will they shoot it in St. Louis? I mean, we don't have the same stadium that we had back in 2003.

With Kevin Pollak also on board as producer/screenwriter, I am taking a wild guess that Mr. Pollak will end up playing Tony. Safe bet?

Yes, it has been said that she walked away from "Bill" because she feels that the directors are not well known enough.

[UPDATE:} - Aaron Eckhart was amazing in "Thank You for Smoking", and if you haven't seen him in "In the Company of Men", then you really should check it out. This film still has a stellar cast and I am confident that all will be roses. Hats off to Bernie Goldmann and Melisa Wallack.
